Croatian Citizenship
Croatian law provides several distinct routes to citizenship. Whether you have Croatian ancestry, are married to a Croatian citizen, or have lived in Croatia long-term, there is likely a pathway that applies to you.

Citizenship by Descent
If you have a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent who was a Croatian citizen, you may be eligible to apply. This is the most common route for diaspora families.
Direct descendants of Croatian citizens — regardless of how many generations removed.
Collect birth, marriage, and citizenship certificates tracing your lineage to a Croatian ancestor. Apply through a Croatian consulate or embassy if residing abroad.
Citizenship as a Member of the Croatian Nation
Available to those who can demonstrate a genuine affiliation with the Croatian people, even without direct ancestry — through identity declarations, cultural participation, or community involvement.
Individuals who have declared Croatian identity in official documents, or who have actively participated in Croatian cultural, scientific, or sports associations abroad.
Provide evidence of affiliation or organisational participation. Submit application through a Croatian embassy or consulate.
Citizenship by Marriage
Foreign nationals married to a Croatian citizen may apply for citizenship after a qualifying period, provided the relationship is genuine and the applicant meets language and cultural requirements.
Spouses of Croatian citizens.
Must be married for at least three years and living together. Must demonstrate Croatian language proficiency and a basic understanding of Croatian culture.
Citizenship by Naturalization
Long-term residents of Croatia who have integrated into society may apply for citizenship after eight years of continuous residence. This period can be reduced in certain circumstances.
Long-term legal residents of Croatia.
Meet the residency requirement (typically 8 years), demonstrate Croatian language proficiency, and show integration into Croatian society.
Citizenship by Special Interest
The Croatian government may grant citizenship to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to Croatia — renowned scientists, athletes, artists, or public figures of national significance.
Individuals with significant and demonstrable contributions to Croatia.
Application reviewed and approved by the Ministry of the Interior. Requires documented evidence of contributions.
Re-Adoption of Former Citizenship
Former Croatian citizens who lost their citizenship — for example by acquiring citizenship in another country — can apply to have it reinstated.

Submit documentation proving previous Croatian citizenship and the reasons for its loss.
Citizenship for Stateless Persons
Stateless individuals, or those unable to acquire citizenship elsewhere, may apply under specific humanitarian and legal criteria.
